The Institute for Scientific Research (ISR) is a leading-edge,
advanced scientific research and development company specializing
in providing multidisciplinary solutions to technology
problems for its civilian, commercial and government clients,
including NASA and the Department of Defense.
The BE&K Building Group constructed ISR's five-story,
corporate headquarters and research and development facility
using the design-build method of project delivery. Located
in the I-79 Technology Park in northern West Virginia,
the facility provides secure, ultramodern research space
for several hundred scientists, engineers, mathematicians,
physicists, information technology specialists, administrators
and managers.
The scope of work encompassed construction of the main
facility and a three-level parking garage with space for
585 vehicles. The main facility has raised-access floors
and fiber-optic networks, and includes areas for small-scale
manufacturing, flight simulators, special compartmentalized
information stations, and administrative offices. In addition
to approximately 89,000 sf of research laboratory space
available on the upper floors, approximately 22,000 sf
of secure research laboratories is located below ground.
The facility offers TV-quality streaming video to all
desktops; bandwidth-intensive computer research capabilities;
complete security coverage, including video surveillance;
energy efficient, environmentally sustainable design;
advanced video teleconferencing; and wireless network
technology.
A major portion of the building is accessible to the public,
including a general reception area, a multipurpose exhibition
center, a 218-seat educational conference auditorium,
a 120′ tall observation tower and food service facilities.
The facility also features a wellness center on the first
floor with fitness areas and a swimming pool. Restaurant
quality dining commons and general gathering spaces for
informal meetings are also provided. These common areas
are designed to promote interaction between researchers
and technicians.
The main building is constructed of a structural steel
frame, glass and metal skin, and a metal and membrane
roof. This component of the project required a foundation
system with deep retaining walls, as well as plumbing,
HVAC, fire protection, electrical and telecommunications
services designed to support building activities and associated
equipment. The parking garage has a precast concrete frame,
masonry exterior and a landscaped plaza on the roof deck.
