The BE&K Building Group is providing construction management services for a two-phase expansion and renovation of North Carolina State University's Polk Science Hall. Originally constructed in 1926, the 108,092 sf building currently houses the University's Agricultural Communications, Animal Science and Biochemistry departments.
Phase One encompasses construction of a new X-Ray Crystallography suite. This project required demolition of the existing one-story Polk Science Hall central building to make room for the new facility. The old building was torn dorn just days before fall classes began.
The second phase entails a four-story addition to house office space for researchers and various types of laboratories — Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) laboratory, Mass Spectrometry laboratory, Biosafety Containment Laboratory — Level 3 (BSL-3) and several general labs. Phase Two also includes renovations to Polk Science Hall's existing East and West wings to accommodate connections to the new addition at each floor level.
When complete, the new Polk Science Hall will complement two adjacent four-story buildings.
