The BE&K Building Group and Ajax Building Construction, a joint venture, is providing preconstruction and construction services for Florida State University's new state-of-the-art Chemistry Building located on the University's main campus. The facility is designed to accommodate four endowed Chairs and 165 researchers whose areas of focus include molecular synthesis, biomaterials and bioengineering, molecular recognition and molecular engineering, and nanotechnology/materials chemistry.

The facility will provide the University's Chemistry and Biochemistry Departments with flexible laboratories that can be used to perform a broad spectrum of research activities per their specific requirements — from molecular synthesis, neurochemistry, bionano and proteomics, to molecular computing, nanoimaging and polymer chemistry. A total of 160 low-flow fume hoods will be installed to support this research.

The building structure for the first five floors is cast-in-place concrete with masonry infill, while the penthouse is constructed of structural steel with masonry infill. The exterior is designed using brick with cast stone accents. The mechanical system comprises a chilled water system with air handlers mounted in the penthouse. This is fed by the University's campus-supplied chilled water.
