The new Phifer Science Hall
features an historic design that complements the architectural
character of Converse College's campus. The interior features
state-of-the-art technology for the multidisciplinary
science learning environment.
Components include:
• Teaching laboratories for Botany,
Chemistry and Biology
• Laser lab
• Computer Science labs
• Greenhouse
• Adaptable classrooms
• Auditorium
• Shared support space
The new facility will enable the Converse College faculty
to advance teaching and research in the sciences as well
as foster a more comprehensive science curriculum for
students.
The facility was designed as a showcase for science, enhancing
the college's position in the highly competitive niche
market that women's colleges have created within the traditionally
male-dominated field of science. Wide corridors, an abundance
of natural light and comfortable gathering spaces on each
floor invite students and faculty to continue discussions
outside the classroom and laboratory environment.
The project has presented several challenges for our construction
team. The site is extremely tight with Montgomery Hall,
almost touching the new Science Hall on one side. The
school identified a tight laydown area for the project
in order to keep as much of the lawn available for students
as possible and to help to ensure our delivery process
was more efficient. Despite inclement weather, the facility
was delivered on schedule and within budget in time for
the Fall 2004 semester.
