Following a major expansion
and renovation in 2004, the 170,000 sf Bell & Evans
Poultry Processing Facility in Fredericksburg, Pennsylvania
is among the most advanced poultry processing facilities
in the United States — and the world. A 65,000 sf
addition houses state-of-the-art evisceration, portioning,
air-chill system and pet food processing lines. A 10,000
sf area containing the cafeteria, welfare areas and existing
evisceration space was renovated to blend in with the
new construction. With new processing equipment being
used for the first time in the United States, the facility's
production capacity has increased by more than 25% to
1 million chickens per week (over 50 million annually).
The project is constructed of precast concrete columns
and beams in processing areas, structural steel, bar-joist
and joist-girder framing system over second-story support
areas and a separate steel frame mezzanine area.
Architectural details include precast concrete wall panels,
insulated metal panels with stainless steel finish, vapor
barrier installation in floors and roofs, new main and
employee entrances, acid brick floors in processing areas,
quarry tile flooring in employee corridor, glazed ceramic
tiles over precast concrete wall panels, liquid sealed
concrete floor in air chill area, special non-shrink concrete
floor on second-story level, and a single-ply membrane
roof.
Included in the project are rooftop air-handling units
with filters and desiccation, a 500-kW emergency generator
installed to provide emergency back-up lighting and power,
and a new water system filtering 100% of cold water used
in processing the chickens.
Our firm managed the construction for this award-winning
project. Preconstruction services, design assistance,
project estimating, project scheduling, procurement, and
expediting services were also provided.
