Our firm was selected by the Seminole County Public Schools for the expansion and renovation of Tuskawilla Middle School. The campus, which is organized around a central courtyard, is now able to accommodate 1,500 students. The existing campus was built on 20 acres in 1974, and a cafeteria addition was constructed in 1989.
The BE&K Building Group's scope of work included construction of a new three-story classroom building along with a theater, an administration/support services building, and a media center. The project included demolition and removal of the existing one-story, 1,200-student capacity classroom building located in the center of the campus. The scope of work also included the addition of a wellness center and lobby to the existing gymnasium following renovation of that facility. The multifaceted project was executed in phases over a two-year period during which time our firm was diligent in scheduling construction activities in a way that would minimize disruption to students and faculty occupying the facilities. This required close coordination of critical activities — for example, building turnover was scheduled during school holidays, weekends and summer breaks. As a result, classes were never interrupted.
The initial phase included necessary site work, renovation of the existing cafeteria, and construction of the classroom building and theater. At this time a central energy plant was added which was sized to supply the new campus master plan. The cafeteria addition and renovation was completed over the first summer break. This was a critical milestone as it allowed students use of the dining facility when school resumed in the fall. The new classroom building and the central energy plant was completed over the first fall break, with student/faculty occupancy immediately following.
The next phase of the project included the removal of the existing classroom building, a major expansion/renovation of the gymnasium, and construction of the administration building and the media center. The final phase was carefully planned so that students and faculty could return to school without construction activities in occupied areas. This phase also included the addition of a jogging trail, sports court, parking and bus drop-off/parent pick-up areas. Our firm self-performed all concrete work, including foundations, slabs on grade and hardscaping, as well as miscellaneous demolition and rough carpentry.
The entire project was completed five months ahead
of the contract schedule.
The Tuskawilla Middle School project is one of three major school construction projects Seminole County Public Schools has awarded the BE&K Building Group since 2004. Other project locations for multiphase renovations/expansions include Oviedo High School in Oviedo, and Seminole High School in Sanford. Project delivery for each has been construction management at risk.
