Our firm was selected to build a new multistory K-12 school facility — and associated amenities — for Cherokee Central School, part of the community of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. The all-new campus is designed to serve approximately 1,900 students. The site is nestled in between the Blue Ridge Parkway to the east, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to the north, and the Ocmulgee River to the west.

This project is designed to achieve a LEED® Silver Certification. The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™ administered by the U.S. Green Building Council is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings. Once this certification is achieved, the Cherokee Central School facility will be the largest LEED Certified school project east of the Mississippi River.

At the heart of the project is the main academic facility, which comprises three separate but connected classroom buildings for elementary, middle school and high school students. Shared building areas include an indoor sports arena, an auditorium and a full-service food preparation area with walk-in cooler. Each of the three student groups will have its own dining room, media center and basketball/multipurpose facility.

The main facility has a conventional steel structure with concrete foundations and features a combination of standing seam metal roofing and single-ply thermoplastic membrane roofing. The classroom buildings utilize a structural insulated panel system (SIPS™) for the roof and exterior walls. The exterior veneers include a patterned cement stucco system, native stone veneer wainscot, fiber cement lap siding, and fiber cement board trim.

A geothermal heat pump system will be used to heat and cool the entire school. This closed-loop system is supported by 290'-6" diameter wells drilled to a depth of 450'.

Site amenities include a new football stadium, stickball/soccer field with surrounding track surface, softball/baseball complex, playgrounds, walking trails, asphalt paving and parking areas, and an area utilizing a pervious parking surface. Sitework for this project required approximately 150,000 cubic yards of fill material.
