Idlewild Elementary Students Enjoy Visit from BE&K Building Group Volunteers on Earth Day

December 1, 2008 - Earlier this year, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools selected the BE&K Building Group to provide construction services for a phased addition and renovation project at Idlewild Elementary School in Charlotte. When the project is finished next fall, the school will have a new gym, cafeteria and more classrooms.

In a non-traditional type of ground breaking ceremony in April, the BE&K Building Group's Charlotte office organized a community service project to celebrate Earth Day. Christina Bisbikis, Jane Boland, Susan Epps, Katie Jones, and Lexee Zutz helped organize this "going green" event to generate enthusiasm among the students, parents and local neighborhoods for their building project. Equally important goals were to raise awareness about environmental preservation, and educate students on how they as individuals can make a difference. Thirty Charlotte-based BE&K Building Group employees volunteered their time to help celebrate Earth Day with Idlewild Elementary School students and staff.

The teachers involved in the Earth Day celebration were grateful for our company's willingness to get involved with their school on such a personal level. First grade teacher Jeannett Carofana stated, "I think the biggest, most unexpected response was in our afternoon program when the slide of the new school was shown. It was such a natural, spontaneous reaction of appreciation for the new school. I thought I was excited, and now I know they are, too. It was a wonderful day, and so generous of your company to make a big deal of us by giving their day to Idlewild."
