Washington Employees Participate in the Susan G. Komen National Race for the Cure
June 30, 2008 - Six BE&K Building Group employees lent their feet to a very important cause this past summer by running in the Susan G. Komen 5K National Race for the Cure in Washington, D.C. The festivities, held on the National Mall, began with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. This annual event's proceeds go to support breast cancer research, education and treatment.
According to The Washington Post, the race drew 45,500 participants. Together, participants and supporters raised $4.9 million, up from $4.4 million last year. About 1,600 teams participated in the race, representing congressional offices, schools, companies, hospitals and national embassies.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who ran in the race and whose mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1970, noted, "There are very, very few who have not been touched in some way by breast cancer." Several celebrities also attended the race, including actresses Cynthia Nixon and Gabrielle Union.
