Greenville Employees Participate in Six-Mile March for Babies to Help Prevent Birth Defects
April 26, 2008 - On a pleasant Saturday morning in late April, BE&K Building Group-Greenville employees proved that “every step counts” in giving back to their community. Team members participated in the six-mile March for Babies walk, formerly known as WalkAmerica. This signature annual event supports the March of Dimes’ mission to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. Each team member set a personal monetary goal and contacted friends and family members to make a onetime donation. BE&K Building Group walkers raised an impressive total of $2,558; this was $1,058 more than the team’s original goal of $1,500.
The BE&K Building Group’s 13-member team included: Janice Arledge, Celeste Blinston (wife of Greg Blinston), Judi Clark, Clarice Groves, Leslie Jones, Michelle Land, Carol Neely, Ken Olson, Berry Ponder, Lindsay Sapp, Mitzi Scarborough, Deanna Skipper, and Roslyn Stoddard. Team members proudly displayed the BE&K Building Group spirit by wearing specially designed t-shirts with the words “Every step counts...” on the front and “To Building A Better Future” above our logo on the back.
The BE&K Building Group’s team captain Lindsay Sapp said, “This walk allowed us to support the Greenville community by getting involved in a local event, walk six miles to better our health, and raise money for a worthy charity. The money raised will support lifesaving research, community services, education and advocacy that help babies get a healthy start. The weather was a warm sunny day with a slight breeze and our team had a great time!”
In addition to actively participating in the walk, the BE&K Building Group hosted a construction-themed spirit station where March for Babies walkers could stop for water and pick up company-branded items such as lip balm, small water bottles. Our station attracted even more visitors when Berry Ponder decided hardhats were multipurpose and provided water for the furry four-legged walkers by flipping the hardhats upside down and filling them with water.
Mac Carpenter, head of the BE&K Building Group’s Greenville office, commended the team’s efforts saying, “I'd like to compliment Lindsay Sapp’s leadership as the team captain for our March of Dimes/March for Babies event. She and her team did a great job in raising money, organizing and walking the April 26th event. These efforts show commitment to improving and giving to our community.”
