Orlando Employees Steadfast in Commitment to “Getting Fit” While Serving the Local Community, Non-Profit Organizations

April 25, 2008 - Motivated by the $10,000 they raised by joining “Team Burnham for Medical Research” in the 13.1-mile Walt Disney World Half Marathon last winter, employees in our Orlando office continue to serve the community while getting fit.

Despite the April day’s 88 degree weather, 13 employees and four of their family members ran the 13th Annual Insurance Office of America (IOA) Corporate 5k through the Parramore District of downtown Orlando. Although home to the nationally known sports venue, the Citrus Bowl, the area has become dilapidated over the years. A portion of the proceeds from the 5k was used to send children from the area to summer camp. Over $60,000 was donated by IOA through registration fees to the events’ charities including the Track Shack Foundation. Beneficiaries include the Parramore Kidz Zone, IOA Foundation, Orlando Runners Club and the Christian Service Center.

“It was so exciting to be a part of one of Central Florida’s largest corporate fitness events and experience the interaction of corporate executives and companies taking over the Citrus Bowl at the race,” said Mark Hefferin, head of the Orlando office. “We were overjoyed to see how many employees were motivated to get out and get fit.”

Although all who competed were applauded for their efforts, Chris Sadowski, our senior project manager for the Burnham Institute at Lake Nona, had the fastest time on the BE&K Building Group’s team. Sadowski completed the 3.1-mile run in 19:19, with Cole Hensley, 14-year-old son of Don Hensley, business developer, a close 30 seconds behind him!

The IOA Corporate 5k run/walk is Orlando's largest 5k –and the second largest 5k in Florida – with over 10,000 registered corporate runners and walkers.
