Food for Others Program Helps Families in Need Near Washington, D.C.
March 14, 2008 - This past spring, Washington office employees once again lent a helping hand to Food for Others, a community food bank serving the Northern Virginia area. The effort was organized by Gayle Lorenz, project controls manager for the BE&K Building Group’s biotech manufacturing project for CEL-SCI Corporation in Elkridge, Maryland. The BE&K Building Group volunteers spent a half-day at the distribution center unloading and sorting groceries, packing emergency food and U.S. Department of Agriculture boxes, filling bags, and performing general warehouse work.
Emergency food distribution boxes – like those prepared by our volunteers – are given to people who are referred to Food for Others by area social workers, clergy, hospitals, schools and various social service organizations. The allotment of food can provide nutrition for a family for seven days, if necessary, until other forms of assistance become available.
While performing work on the BE&K Building Group’s Washington office expansion, subcontractor Fairfax Glass Company donated $1,000 worth of materials and service. In appreciation of this kind gesture, Stephen Skinner, head of our Washington office, passed along the contribution to Food for Others – presenting a $1,000 check to Food for Others in recognition of Fairfax Glass Company.
Food for Others is the largest distributor of free food directly to people in need in Northern Virginia. Food for Others holds sole responsibility for 14 distribution sites, serves 40 organizations, feeds 1,800 families weekly and distributes 2,000,000 pounds of food annually.
